Birthday abroad

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Well, yesterday was my birthday. I spent the majority of it working on my thesis and sleeping. My cold seems to be moving into my chest so, I feel it is necessary to lay low for a few days. My land lady gave me the Brit version of Theraflu and it kicked my butt. I fell immediatley to sleep. It has a kind of painkiller in it I don’t think I’ve taken before, nor do I recognize. In the evening I went I had dinner at a Tandoori place. I chose it because it was empty, usually not a good barometer but I wasn’t feeling well and just wanted to eat in peace. The owner ended up being very sweet to me. He was half Iranian and half Iraqi and has lived in London for 8 years. He was an hour away from the end of his Ramadan observance where he had been fasting for quite some time. After he offered me a free drink I told him it was my birthday and he gave me a free salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and peppers as well. We talked for about an hour. The universe has once again taken care of me in a time of need. It was lovely. After dinner I went to a small theater just around the corner and watched a play called “The Years Between” about a woman who’s husband was supposedly killed in WWII. Freed from the responsibilities of being a wife in the 40’s she went on to gain a seat in parliament and engage in a new love interest. Her husband shows up alive 3 years later though….AWKWARD….it was good. The acting was terrific, I couldn’t believe it and the tickets were 11 pounds.

I’m off to the chemists this morning to see what fun remedies they might have and then to school.
