Birthday abroad

September 26th, 2007 by Katrina Cole

Well, yesterday was my birthday. I spent the majority of it working on my thesis and sleeping. My cold seems to be moving into my chest so, I feel it is necessary to lay low for a few days. My land lady gave me the Brit version of Theraflu and it kicked my butt. I fell immediatley to sleep. It has a kind of painkiller in it I don’t think I’ve taken before, nor do I recognize. In the evening I went I had dinner at a Tandoori place. I chose it because it was empty, usually not a good barometer but I wasn’t feeling well and just wanted to eat in peace. The owner ended up being very sweet to me. He was half Iranian and half Iraqi and has lived in London for 8 years. He was an hour away from the end of his Ramadan observance where he had been fasting for quite some time. After he offered me a free drink I told him it was my birthday and he gave me a free salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and peppers as well. We talked for about an hour. The universe has once again taken care of me in a time of need. It was lovely. After dinner I went to a small theater just around the corner and watched a play called “The Years Between” about a woman who’s husband was supposedly killed in WWII. Freed from the responsibilities of being a wife in the 40’s she went on to gain a seat in parliament and engage in a new love interest. Her husband shows up alive 3 years later though….AWKWARD….it was good. The acting was terrific, I couldn’t believe it and the tickets were 11 pounds.

I’m off to the chemists this morning to see what fun remedies they might have and then to school.

hi kat! happy belated birthday! i’m glad people are still willing to feed and entertain you even though you’re sick. are you starting to talk funny yet? i notice here you’ve written “chemist”, is that what you canadians normally say for the person who fills prescriptions, etc.? my favorite expression from visiting the UK is to knock someone up, e.g. you’re staying in a hotel and they offer to “knock you up” in the morning. kind regards from your penpal and future multimedia-mogul business partner! -sean :-)

I’m actually having to make a conscious effort NOT to talk funny. I heard a couple of my American classmates feigning the accent last night and was disgusted. I wanted to slap them. I wanted to stay in the UK more though, so I didn’t. I haven’t heard the “knock you up” slang yet but that is hilarious. Thanks for the warning. I’ll probably still giggle when I do hear it though. You take any roller derby pics yet?

Hi Sister!!! I’m glad you’re over your illness. Just thought I’d pop in and tell you that all is well here in the states, aside from the usual governmental crap that happens here. Mum says you just recently took a trip north to Scotland. Did you get any photos?

Oh, and also, can you send me any chocolate? hee!

By the way, don’t bother making the effort to NOT talk funny. It isn’t worth it. Go with the flow.
